About Metadata 

Metadata is defined as "data about data". When you are considering whether or not a particular data set meets your needs, you probably consider a lot of factors. For example, you might want to know

  • when the data were collected,
  • who built the data set,
  • what format it's in,
  • how large the file is,
  • how the data set was meant to be used and
  • where you should go to see about using it.
All of these factors make up metadata - the who, what, when, where and why of the data world.

As we collect and post metadata from the Central Coast, you can check it out at the
state-level metadata clearinghouse run by the California Geographic Information Association.
