About Metadata

Metadata is defined as "data about data". When you are considering whether or not a particular data set meets your needs, you probably consider a lot of factors. For example, you might want to know

when the data were collected,
who built the data set,
what format it's in,
how large the file is,
how the data set was meant to be used and
where you should go to see about using it.

All of these factors make up metadata - the who, what, when, where and why of the data world.

As we collect and post metadata from the Central Coast, you can check it out at the
state-level metadata clearinghouse run by the California Geographic Information Association.

Other Central Coast Metadata Projects

The CCJDC is working actively with other spatial data consortia in California to expand access to our data resources and to knowledgeably fill in the gaps. Two of the groups in the coastal area of California include:

Marine Mapping Users Group (MMUG)
The Channel Islands Data Consortium (CIRGIS)
The San Luis Obispo Geographic Information Consortium.
Regional Water Quality Bibliography: Another source of information on the Central Coast can be found in a bibliography of published documents related to water quality.
